Synopsis
As cities continue to expand, the built environment is under growing pressure to balance development with the urgent need to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion. Regenerative design is a transformative approach that goes beyond sustainability to create buildings and urban systems. It reframes the role of the built environment from a resource consumer to a positive contributor, shaping healthy ecosystems and bringing people back in touch with nature, where people and nature co-evolve.

This presentation, supported by SGBC Member AECOM Singapore, draws on insights from Regenerative by Design, authored by David Cheshire, Director at AECOM. The session will explain the mindset shift required to design within planetary boundaries and recognise our dependence on healthy natural systems. Participants can expect to gain an understanding of regenerative design principles and how they can be applied to create resilient, restorative places. 

Key principles covered include systems thinking, bio-inspired design, circular economy approaches, and designing within environmental budgets. The session will bring these ideas to life through global case studies, including Google Bay View Campus, Nanjing Eco-Island, Schoonschip, the PAE Living Building, and Green School South Africa. Emerging technologies such as algae façades, microbial fuel cells, and green roofs will also be explored.

Trainer Profile
David Cheshire is a Director at AECOM, where he leads initiatives in sustainability and regenerative design for the built environment. He is the author of Building Revolutions, The Handbook to Building a Circular Economy, and most recently Regenerative by Design, which examines how buildings can actively support ecosystems and deliver positive environmental impact.

Based in London, David heads AECOM’s Sustainability Group and brings more than 30 years of experience advancing sustainable practices across construction and building projects. His expertise includes policy research and the creation of best practice guidance, such as CIBSE’s Sustainability Guide and a RIBA publication on the circular economy.
